FOOD DISTRIBUTION in Haiti

10/5/08          $20,000 = 666 people $1/day for food for 30 days

"When you feed one Haitian, you feed 50."

Gueston Pacius, repeating a Haitian saying  (obviously a little exaggeration, but gives the spirit of the people) about the impact of donated food for the people and the traditional Haitian ethic of sharing.

There is no perfect formula for distribution of the donated resources. With almost total loss of family food, resources, and gardens, the committee felt that the largest donations needed to be given now. This will give them money for food immediately. When possible, group purchasing is done to increase the value of food purchases.

Each week, committees of 4-5 persons from each of the churches have been meeting to discuss the appropriate and equitable distribution of money to the church members and families. When funds are received by the committees, they report back to the larger group with written documents attesting to the witnessed distribution in an effort to ensure integrity in all transactions.

In the last 18 months, there has been a tripling of rice prices. The UN estimates that poor countries are paying 40% more for food this year than last year. Haitians are spending about 50-80% of their income on food (compared to 10% in Germany and less in the US). Obviously, this means little for housing and even less for health care. Prior to the flood, 80% of Haitians were living on less than $2/day, and 50% live on less than $1/day. Half of the children under 5 are malnourished. Gasoline is over $7/gallon.
