UGANDA LANDSLIDE - 3-5-10 - Our World Radio speakers in Uganda report the church is alright after the landslide in the Bududa disctrict on Monday. So far, 83 people have been recovered and over 300 still missing. Some were calling from their cell phones beneath the mud.

CHILE - UPDATE

3-9-10 - This weekend we met with the Chilean Military to coordinate future shipments. The government has revised their death toll now estimating 528 deaths. Assessment continues during the many aftershocks. No additional damage has been reported.

3-3-10 - We have been receiving good reports so far from Chile considering the magnitude of the earthquake. Basically everyone in this area has structural damage to their home to some extent, but we have only heard of one brother who has lost his home and have received no reports of fatalities within the church there. Looting has become a problem in neighborhoods. the Chilean army is deployed now which should alleviate some of that worry.

3-1-10 A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck chile early Saturday morning (2-27). We are working diligently to assess the situation and see where we can help. The president of Chile did announce just now that they will accept humanitarian aid which will certainly make the work of Christians easier. Right now, the death toll hovers around 700 with more to be expected as they move rubble. Although a higher magnitude, this earthquake did not cause the same level of devastation that we see in Haiti. This is primarily due to the preparedness in building requirements and infrastructure of the country. While our most urgent need continues to lie in Haiti, there are people suffering in Chile who need your prayers. As of this morning, the primary need in Chile is medical attention and supplies. MORE TO COME !

----------------------------END - CHILE UPDATE------------------------

3-2-10 -David received a large shipment that will soon be in the hands of those who so desparately need it.

2-22-10 - Jean and the Church in Port au Prince helped over 800 people last Sunday with rice, beans, clothes, mattresses, milk, oil, sugar, and tents. People are responding to the Gospel because of the love shown to them through what you are doing in this relief effort. This is where they will true relief. The result of your efforts is many new Christians that have a new family to help them through this time of need.

2-20-10 - We have been able to secure additional supplies of beans from the Dominican Republic as needed (for a better price too).

2-19-10 - Having a Command Post and support of the local churches has been such a benefit for helping those in need. People are now realizing that the church has connections to many many resources and we have been able to connect the right people to make things happen. You can really see the providence of God at work in this relief effort. This morning, an orphanage approached David with a need for 10 hospital beds for the wounded orphans (many don't even know they are orphans yet). He made a call to a medical supply administrator with the need and guess how many hospital beds were available? TEN. Also, a nurse approached us, who was on her way back to the states with a lot of antibiotics that she could not take back. Minutes later, a doctor tells us that he is in desperate need of.......ANTIBIOTICS. The local hospitals do not feed their patients, so we have been able to provide many people there with food and water.

Feeding patients at the hospital:

2-17-10 - Port au Prince - Food, Shelter, and Sanitation continue to be the priorities in this recovery. Rubble removal is becoming an increasing need to have areas to house people in tents. Yesterday, the National Civil Protection Agency in Haiti estimated the death toll at 217,366, but the actual number will probably never be known. It is estimated that over half a million people have fled Port au Prince since the earthquake which is placing an increased need in the north. Also yesterday, a mudslide in Cap Haitian killed four children as a result of a tremor off the coast. The church continues to minister to their neighboring communities in Haiti.

The Delmas church meets beneath tarps in the courtyard of a Catholic church building across the street.

Crews work trying to find bodies left in the rubble of the church building

There is still much work to be done

2-16-10 - David and Lucner worked with Jean in Port Au Prince today feeding many people and assessing the new needs there. The excavation of the destroyed church building on Delmas Street has begun. Most of the bodies have been removed only leaving around 10 still in the rubble. After the excavation has been completed, the church will be able to stay in that area until a new building can be constructed. David, Lucner, and Jean were able to secure more food today for the church and the community. Much good work is being done and God is being praised. Please continue to pray for our team in Haiti as they are working extremely hard with little rest. You serve, they serve, and God gets the glory!

2-15-10 - David is back at the Command Post in Haiti coordinating with Ben Adkins in the U.S. - Daily feeding is being done through the churches in local hospitals, villages, and surrounding areas

*February 15, 2010 - From Jean Elmera - Port Au Prince:

In the midst of every disaster, God's redemptive plan is at work even though it is usually hard to see it. Hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes do not hinder His saving work but rather the opposite is often true.

An encouraging report of good news comes from our brother and World Radio speaker Jean Elmera from Port au Prince, Haiti. He reports an intensified hunger for God after the tragedy. Large crowds are attending worship in an abandoned Catholic church across the street from the building that was destroyed. On Feb. 6th fourteen people were baptized including a Pentecostal minister and radio station owner.

With funds provided by caring people all over the world, WFR Relief has provided food and water to Bro. Elmera and his helpers. They are providing two hot meals to dozens of people every day and trying to encourage the people the best they can. They have also given out food boxes to nearly 500 people. The church building in Port au Prince and the Delmas Christian school were reduced to rubble, but faithful Christians are serving and ministering. They hope to soon have the 470 students back to their studies under tents until a permanent place can be found.

Brother Elmera stated:

“ People are looking more and more to the church for help and advice . We appreciate your prayers and support which enable us to lift our hands and to lift up Christ’s name in times like these . Our message: the Church of Christ indestructible . The church is not a building. When this building was destroyed, we know God has a better plan.

With love,

Jean Elmera

Minister

*February 4, 2010 - David Heath

WFR Relief ministry volunteer, David Heath, reports that he is busy getting much needed medical supplies to hospitals and doctors. David’s extensive military back ground has uniquely equipped him to be the point man for operations on the island for WFR Relief. He has been able to get military assistance that very likely would not have possible but for his military training and connections.

David reports that food is in short supply but he is doing everything possible to acquire more. His is energy and enthusiasm personified and we are blessed to have him leading the charge to help the hurting of Haiti.

Our work so far has been focused on the immediate needs of the hungry and injured and establishing a command post and distribution network for ongoing operations. We are in Haiti for the long haul. In the not too distant future clearing rubble and rebuilding will be going full speed. Until then we will care for our Haitian brothers and sisters the best we can and empower them to reach out to those about them with a helping hand and the saving message of the good news about Jesus.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has prayed for our work and for the Haitian believers. And of course, we praise God for your generosity as you have given to make our relief work possible. Thank you for your faithfulness to help the those who lives have been forever changed. Because you cared, God will be glorified.

You can also see David’s reports and pictures on Facebook “WFR Relief Ministries”.

*January 20, 2010 -Report from Ben Adkins & David Heath, WFR Relief Damage Assessment Team:

Some things David wanted me to share:

Don, especially for you—he said that he has made coordination with the military, UNICEF, & USAID for Healing Hands at the airport in Port au Prince (PAP so that any church groups coming into PAP will have all the food & water, etc. for their missions that they need.  It is set up so that Lucner Pierre, Jean Elmera, and Debbie Vanderbeek know where to enter the airport and meet with these officials.

Sad news – the largest church of Christ in PAP has been crushed and there are a reported 50 buried bodies. He was able to speak with Lester Holt (NBC TV) today and implored him to move someone in to help that area.

Regarding the earthquake today – he felt something but thought it was a large truck going down the road.

In the short time he’s been in PAP he says it’s been both better and worse than can be imagined. Better in that he’s seen not a shred of violence of any kind (of course it’s there but it’s certainly not widespread) but worse devastation than you can even gain from watching the TV shows.

Take care and keep them in your prayers and even more keep the Haitian people in your prayers.

 God bless,

Maxine Heath
